Critics sat up and took notice at the off-Broadway bow of the musical Lucky Stiff in 1989. The show introduced a promising new writing team in lyricist Lynn Ahrens and composer Stephen Flaherty -- and that promise has been more than fulfilled in the years since with such works as their Tony-nominated Once on This Island, their Oscar-nominated film score for Anastasia and their Tony-winning Ragtime. Houston audiences can check out the little musical that launched their careers as Masquerade Theatre presents the area premiere of Lucky Stiff. The zany premise: An unassuming English shoe salesman will inherit a fortune if he takes his croupier uncle on a weeklong vacation to Monte Carlo -- oh yes, and the uncle has just been murdered. Lucky Stiff opens Friday, with performances at 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, through March 8, at Masquerade Theatre, 1537 N. Shepherd. Tickets are $25; $20 for students and senior citizens. Call 713-861-7045.
